A postdoctoral position in Algebraic Graph Theory at the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics, Comenius University in Bratislava, is open starting in October 2026.

The title of the project is Vertex-minimal graphs whose automorphism group are isomorphic to given finite abstract groups.

Particular emphasis of the project is on the study of Automorphism Groups of Graphs viewed as permutation representations. The main objective is the improvement of our understanding of graph symmetry with relation to group structure and the implication of these theories to the abstract structure of groups and vice versa. In particular, we intend to study extremal problems for graphs with certain properties. A major focus is the study of vertex-minimal graphs among all the graphs whose automorphism group is isomorphic to a given finite abstract group with some addition of graph properties like planarity or certain kind of colorability.

We are offering a postdoctoral position starting preferably from October 1st, 2026 (not later than December 2026). The contract length is 1 year with the possibility of extension up to 3 years.

Expectations from the candidate:

  • strong background, good skills, high working ethics, and experience with work in Algebraic Graph Theory and Permutation Group Theory,
  • good experience with scientific writing,
  • up to 3 years from the PhD defense,
  • age under 35 years
  • ability to efficiently cooperate with other research team members and graduate students

We offer:

  • position in an excellent research group at the best Slovak university
  • possibility to cooperate on other research projects
  • health insurance
  • possibility of affordable university accommodation
  • availability of extra-work sport activities within the university

Applications from candidates with PhD in Mathematics are welcome.

To apply, please send

  • short motivation letter describing your previous experience including the topic of your PhD thesis and list of your publications (peer-reviewed papers in scientific journals) and
  • CV

to Prof. Robert Jajcay (robert.jajcayfmph.uniba.sk)

From the submitted applications we will select prospective candidates for an online meeting and selection will be done based on the excellence and promise of the applicant.

The deadline for application submission is June 14, 2026 (midnight CES time).

All highly qualified applicants are welcome. Comenius University does not discriminate on the basis of age, gender, orientation or religion.
