The title of Martin's talk: Internal and External Duality in Abstract Polytopes

Abstract:
Whenever a polytope is invariant under a transformation, such as duality, we often describe this as an ``external" symmetry of the polytope. However, in the context of abstract regular polytopes, self-duality can be seen as an automorphism of the symmetry group of the polytope. Often this symmetry will be an outer automorphism, but there are many interesting cases where the symmetry will be inner, and thus corresponds with a rank-preserving symmetry of the polytope; such polytopes are said to be internally self-dual.

What does this mean combinatorially? What types of polytopes have this property that self-duality yields an inner automorphism? In this talk, we will examine various examples of families of polytopes that are internally-self dual, and explore the implications of a polytope having an internal duality.

This is joint work with Gabe Cunningham.
