Description of the Study Program
Graduates of the bachelor's degree in mathematics at FMFI UK will receive a mathematical education that enables them to cope with the increasing demands of scientific, technical, social and economic development now and in the future. The acquired knowledge and acquired skills significantly exceed general mathematical literacy (eg at the ECDL level) and corporate education. The theoretical basis of the study provides the graduate of the bachelor's degree in mathematics with long-term valid knowledge, shapes his way of thinking (exactness, ability of abstraction), helps him to create an idea of solvability and complexity of problem solving and gives him an apparatus for formal description of systems. The theoretical basis of the study is supplemented by subjects that enable a deeper specialization in one of the areas of mathematics with the possibility of entering into practice after completing a bachelor's degree in mathematics.
Graduates of the bachelor's degree in mathematics are also able to independently create program applications of small and medium scope and complexity in a short time, they will understand not only the theoretical basis of the field but also how theory affects practice. They will have a solid foundation that will allow them to renew their knowledge as mathematics evolves.
Graduates of mathematics are expected to find employment in all types of companies and organizations where non-trivial applications of mathematics are used; in various industries, in the education system, both in the public and private sectors, in banking, transport, healthcare, ecology, etc. However, the main goal of the mathematics program (1st degree) is to prepare for a full master's degree in the following areas: mathematical analysis, mathematical structures, numerical analysis and optimization, probability and mathematical statistics, and computer graphics.
What to Expect
The study program of the bachelor's study of mathematics is characterized by considerable variability, which allows to take into account the individual needs and ideas of the student. On the one hand, the study program can be designed to provide students with the opportunity to choose subjects from a wide range of subjects belonging to the whole field of mathematics. On the other hand, a degree program may focus on one specific aspect of mathematics and cover it in greater depth.
Compulsory subjects form a solid basis on which a specialized superstructure can be built. Subsequently, the student in the third year chooses one with the focus:
- mathematical analysis
- mathematical structures
- numerical analysis and optimization
- probability and mathematical statistics
- computer graphics
Final Thesis
With the bachelor's thesis, the student has to demonstrate the ability to independently acquire theoretical and practical knowledge and use them. The final thesis will be prepared by the student under the guidance of the thesis supervisor. The supervisor of the final thesis will prepare a written report on the final thesis and propose its evaluation. The final work is assessed by the opponent. The opponent will prepare a written report on the final thesis and propose its evaluation.
Examples of successful final theses of our students:
- Vertex-transitive closures of graphs ( Štefánia Glevitzká, 2022)
Graduates' Career Opportunities
Thanks to the variability of the submitted study program, it is possible to prepare a graduate able to find employment immediately after graduation, but also, and especially, a bachelor's graduate able to successfully pursue a master's degree in mathematics.
With few exceptions, all graduates continue their studies at the master's degree level at FMFI UK or at other schools in Slovakia or abroad.
Graduates of this program o.i. can also be found in jobs in: Institute and Faculty of Actuaries, Zurich Insurance Company Ltd.; Vacuumlabs Technology s. r. o.; Tangent Works, IT Services and IT Consulting; Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computing, Universität Heidelberg; Shebo Winery, a. s., Východoslovenská energetika,...
