Description of the Study Program
The graduates of the Insurance Mathematics (PMA) study program will acquire a solid mathematical foundation in the field of mathematical analysis, algebra and mathematical logic. They have detailed knowledge of statistical methods and probabilistic models, which can be used not only in data analysis, but also in specific tasks of actuarial and financial mathematics. The graduates are thoroughly acquainted with the main areas of insurance: life, non-life and health insurance, reinsurance and analytics in the field of insurance and reinsurance. They also know the basics of insurance law, insurance accounting, actuarial science, demographic statistics and risk management. They master programming procedures and they are able to apply them in software that is used in the insurance practice (Python, R, Microsoft Excel or VBA), they can easily handle the transition to specialized actuarial programs, such as Prophet or MoSes. The graduates can also use their knowledge in processing, analyzing, interpreting and visualizing data. In addition to professional and technical knowledge, they also have soft skills in the field of communication, teamwork or preparation of technical outputs. The graduates of the PMA program are ready to continue in their studies in the follow-up master's program Probability and Mathematical Statistics (abbreviated as mPMŠ), as well as in other related study programs. The acquired skills allow them to work in the insurance sector after graduation.
What to Expect
For the bachelor's study program Insurance Mathematics, the condition for successful completion of the study is the completion of all compulsory subjects and obtaining at least 180 credits in total for all subjects. The standard length of study is 3 years. Compulsory subjects include general mathematics and programming subjects, as well as physical education and language subjects. However, the core of the programme consists of profile subjects focused on statistical methods and actuarial or financial mathematics. The profile subjects of the study plan are compulsory and the student will acquire the knowledge and skills that are essential for the completion of the study program. From these subjects, the areas of questions for state exams are compiled and the topics of bachelor's theses are related to them. An expansion of knowledge from individual subjects and the consideration of developments in the field of statistical methods and insurance will be realized by selective subjects, which enable the use of the short-term presence of non-faculty experts in the teaching process. The inclusion of several subjects in the programs is a response to the constructive comments of students and their interest in a particular area.
Final Thesis
With the bachelor's thesis, the student has to demonstrate the ability to independently acquire theoretical and practical knowledge and use them. The final thesis will be prepared by the student under the guidance of the thesis supervisor. The supervisor of the final thesis will prepare a written report on the final thesis and propose its evaluation. The final work is assessed by the opponent. The opponent will prepare a written report on the final thesis and propose its evaluation.
Examples of successful final theses of our students (only in SK language):
- Patrícia Blažová: Návrhy v klinických skúškach s ohraničeniami (2020)
- Tatiana Hrabovská: Zovšeobecnené geometrické rozdelenie (2021)
- Martin Výboh: Poistenie akciového portfólia (2022)
Graduates' Career Opportunities
Graduates of the Bachelor's program Insurance Mathematics at the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics of Comenius University in Bratislava are able to apply for certain positions in the field of insurance (positions for fresh graduates), such as the actuary - junior, risk analyst-junior, actuarial developer, tester of insurance products, etc. After successful completion of a follow-up master's degree (or another related field), the possibilities of their application expand even further. Actuarial graduates are in great demand and highly valued in the labor market. In addition to traditional employers - insurance companies, banks and consulting companies - they are also sought and contacted by public administration entities, analytical companies, technology companies and others. Successful completion of their studies also gives them the prerequisites to pass internationally recognized actuarial examinations in the future (eg at the renowned Institute and Faculty of Actuaries, IFoA).
