Department of Computer Science

The department offers bachelor, master, and doctoral study programmes in computer science. Over 1000 students graduated in master and doctoral  programmes since the department was established in 1974. It is one of the  oldest computer science departments in Europe. 

Our students have repeatedly demonstrated their high level of proficiency in  international student competitions, notably in the ACM Programming Contest. They have also been successful in obtaining scholarships at prestigious North-American and European universities and internships in leading global IT companies. A well balanced selection of theoretical and applied subjects allows our  graduates to stand out in their professional carreers. They have been highly successful in a broad spectrum of professions ranging from programmers, designers and administrators of large systems, through directors, financiers, researchers,  and teachers to  artists and politicians. 

Educational activities at the department have always been closely connected to research. The department is involved in international research cooperation focusing on models of computation, computational complexity, parallel computation, discrete mathematics and graph theory, cryptology and information security, and recently also bioinformatics. Our staff members have achieved many remarkable results. The most notable recognition of the research conducted at the department is the  Godel Prize awarded to Róbert Szelepcsényi in 1995 for the work on closure properties of complexity classes.
