Description of the Study Program

Biomedical Physics is a study programme designed for students of physics whose personal and professional interests extend into medicine. It combines a deep understanding of physical principles with knowledge of the functioning of the human body and prepares graduates for a wide range of professions at the interface of physics, medicine, healthcare, and modern biotechnology. Graduates contribute to the research and development of new methods and technologies, as well as to the practical application of physical principles in diagnostics, therapy, medical technologies, and biomedical research.

Students acquire education across a broad spectrum of physical and mathematical disciplines while also gaining knowledge in anatomy, physiology, biophysics, biochemistry, and other biomedical fields. They develop the understanding necessary to comprehend the processes occurring in the human body and their relationship to physical laws. The programme also introduces students to the principles of modern diagnostic and therapeutic methods, medical imaging systems, and technologies used in contemporary medicine.

The uniqueness of the programme lies in its integration of physics and medicine into a single, comprehensive course of study. Graduates understand not only the physical principles and operation of modern medical devices but also the biological and physiological processes that these devices monitor, measure, or influence. This enables them to combine technical and biological perspectives when solving problems and to communicate effectively with experts from various areas of healthcare and research.

A significant part of the curriculum focuses on the practical application of acquired knowledge. Students become familiar with medical instrumentation and research methods used in clinical and laboratory practice, gain experience in measuring and analysing biological signals, processing biomedical data, and applying modern mathematical, statistical, and computational approaches, including artificial intelligence methods. This allows them to better understand the current challenges of modern healthcare, biomedical research, and digital medicine.

What to Expect

The study programme combines theoretical knowledge, practical laboratory training, and independent project work. Throughout their studies, students gradually become familiar with physical methods used in medicine, principles of biological signal acquisition and measurement, medical imaging, biophysics, data processing, and other areas that form the foundation of contemporary biomedical technologies.

An integral part of the programme is active participation in scientific and research activities. Students have the opportunity to work on research projects under the supervision of experts from the university and collaborating institutions, gaining experience in solving real-world scientific and professional problems. They can present the results of their work at academic events such as the Student Scientific Conference, PREVEDA, meetings of the Slovak Biophysical Society, and other scientific conferences in Slovakia and abroad.

Students may further enrich their studies through professional internships, individual research projects, or study stays at partner universities abroad. The programme offers opportunities to complete part of the studies or a professional placement through Erasmus+ and other international cooperation schemes. Such experiences allow students to broaden their professional horizons, establish new international contacts, and gain valuable experience in a global academic environment.

Throughout the programme, emphasis is placed on developing analytical and critical thinking, independence, teamwork, and the ability to solve complex problems at the intersection of physics, medicine, and the biological sciences.

Final Thesis

The culmination of the study programme is the Master's thesis, through which students demonstrate their ability to independently solve a professional or scientific problem and apply the knowledge acquired during their studies. Master's theses are carried out in cooperation with the faculty's research groups, institutes of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, clinical departments, and other professional partners. Students thus become involved in ongoing research activities during their studies and gain practical experience in experimental work, measurements, data analysis, modelling of biological systems, and the use of modern diagnostic and therapeutic technologies. Consequently, the Master's thesis is not merely a graduation requirement but often serves as the first step towards a scientific career or specialised professional practice.

The following thesis topics illustrate the wide spectrum of research areas pursued by Biomedical Physics students, ranging from fundamental biomedical research to clinical and technological applications in modern medicine.

Graduates' Career Opportunities

Graduates of the Biomedical Physics study programme are professionals prepared to work at the intersection of physics, medicine, biology, and modern technologies. Thanks to their unique combination of scientific, technical, and biomedical knowledge, they are able to understand the needs of both clinical practice and research and contribute to the development of innovative healthcare solutions.

Graduates find employment in research institutions, universities, hospitals and healthcare facilities, companies developing or operating medical technologies, as well as pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. They may participate in research on biological and physiological processes, the development of diagnostic and therapeutic methods, biomedical data analysis, medical image processing, or the implementation of new technologies in healthcare practice.

Thanks to their ability to integrate knowledge from physics, medicine, and the biological sciences, graduates become valuable members of interdisciplinary teams addressing current challenges of modern medicine, ranging from basic research to applications focused on diagnosis, treatment, and patient monitoring. Their education also provides a strong foundation for further professional development and scientific careers both in Slovakia and abroad.
