Michal Šindler:
Terahertz spectroscopy as a tool to study superconductors
Abstract:
Far-infrared techniques played a crucial role in the experimental validation of Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer (BCS) theory and they continue to provide fundamental information about condensate, quasiparticle and vortex behaviour in both equilibrium and non-equilibrium states of superconductors.
In this talk, I will give a basic description of terahertz spectroscopy, especially time-domain THz spectroscopy. Further, I will review what we can learn about superconducting thin films from THz spectra in various experimental conditions. I will focus mainly on classical superconductors. First, I will describe equilibrium spectra using microscopic BCS theory, then we will discuss the influence of vortex presence and their dynamics in a magnetic field. Secondly, I will show how THz spectroscopy can be conveniently used to study non-equilibrium properties.
