Processing of Spent Radioactive Ion-Exchange Resins (Sorbents) from Operation and Decommissioning of Nuclear Facilities
Abstract:
This presentation provides an overview of activities performed within the operation of the nuclear facility Technologies for Processing and Treatment of Radioactive Waste (TSÚ RAO). The activities involve the application of both conventional and innovative technological approaches, taking into account current operational needs and applicable legislative and regulatory requirements. Modern solutions primarily include technologies for the processing of bulk radioactive waste, thermal treatment of combustible radioactive waste, and processing of metallic radioactive waste, as well as other innovative approaches implemented to enhance the overall efficiency of radioactive waste management processes. The objective of processing spent sorbents and other types of radioactive waste is to achieve suitable waste forms of very low-level waste (VLLW) and low-level waste (LLW) that comply with technical, safety, and regulatory requirements for subsequent handling, transport, and final disposal. The presentation outlines current technological practices, operational experience, and opportunities for further development of technologies related to the management of this specific category of radioactive waste.
