Ing. Jana Šimeg Veterníková, PhD. (The Institute of Nuclear and Physical Engineering FEI STU, Bratislava):
Long-term operation and degradation mechanism in structural materials of VVER reactors
Abstract:
The lecture addresses the current state of nuclear energy and explains the need to extend the operational lifetime of nuclear power plants both in Slovakia and worldwide. In the context of long-term operation (LTO), structural materials are exposed to increased degradation loads, which requires more intensive monitoring and assessment.
A key principle of nuclear power plant ageing management is a detailed understanding of the degradation mechanisms affecting structural materials and their systematic control through optimized operation and maintenance. Changes in mechanical properties and microstructure are primarily caused by radiation and thermal ageing, which lead to the gradual embrittlement of materials.
Maintaining the integrity of structural materials, particularly in the primary circuit, is a crucial aspect of nuclear safety. These materials form a physical barrier that prevents the release of radioactive substances into the environment.
