Radoslav Hurtiš:
Numerical and asymptotic analysis of the reactive Elder problem

Abstract:
Density-driven flow and reactive infiltration in fluid-saturated porous media are present in many hydrogeological processes, such as seawater intrusion in coastal aquifers and CO2 sequestration in saline aquifers. The mathematical model for these phenomena consists of advection-diffusion-reaction equations describing the fluid flow, mineral dissolution and transport of a reactive solute and reaction products in a porous medium. A two-dimensional rectangular domain with a solute source located along half of the upper boundary is assumed. The numerical results for the full problem are obtained using a pseudospectral method. The asymptotic solutions for the flow velocity and concentrations of the solute, minerals and products are derived in the limit of small Rayleigh and Damkoehler numbers.
