Mgr. Karol Sučák:
Analysis of elemental composition of atmospheric aerosols using the PIXE method with an external ion beam

Abstract:
The study of the elemental composition of atmospheric aerosols contributes to the understanding of the development of environmental pollution. The CENTA facility, equipped with a 3 MV tandem accelerator, is continually advancing techniques for elemental sample analysis. The PIXE method utilises an external beam, which is currently implemented through modifications of the accelerator system that enable the beam to exit the vacuum chamber. This method allows the analysis of a broad spectrum of samples, which are not constrained by size or composition. The technique was used to determine the concentration of several elements in aerosol samples taken at a meteorological station near the FMFI. Analysis of samples from different periods indicates a long-term trend in the evolution of concentrations of some elements, and at the same time reveals atypical events.
