Harold Steinacker (Faculty of Physics, University of Vienna):
Matrix models and the quantum structure of space, time and matter
Abstract:
After a brief assessment of the present understanding of fundamental physics and its limitations, I will discuss the matrix-model approach towards a quantum theory of space-time and fundamental interactions including gravity. Starting from a very simple and explicit model, this approach naturally leads to a "quantum" notion of space(time) and geometry, and reproduces essential features of string theory and quantum field theory. A specific example of a quantized cosmological space-time will be presented in some detail. The mathematical and physical concepts are very similar to those of basic quantum mechanics, along with some group theory.
