SAS Award for Professor Povinec
The Slovak Academy of Sciences, based on the decision of the SAS Presidency, awarded Prof. Pavel Povinec from the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics of the Comenius University, Dionýz Ilkovič’s Honorary Plaque of SAS for merits in physical and chemical sciences.
Dionýz Ilkovič's Honorary Plaque was awarded to prof. Povinec on the occasion of his life jubilee for excellent results in nuclear physics research, and for the development and application of nuclear methods in environmental sciences on a global scale, as well as for his contribution in the field of science management. Prof. Povinec is a recognized expert in investigations of rare nuclear processes and in environmental physics, he built special laboratories at the Department of Nuclear Physics and Biophysics of the FMPI of CU, as well as at the International Atomic Energy Agency in Monaco, where he was engaged in marine radioactivity research, organized and participated in several oceanographic expeditions, published over 100 papers with this topic, and became the first Slovak oceanographer. He gained new knowledge about the radioactivity of the environment, about the impact of nuclear power plants on their surroundings, about the radiation consequences of the Chernobyl and Fukushima accidents, etc. The obtained results contributed to a better understanding of nuclear and environmental processes, and to a wider use of isotopes as natural tracers. He published the results of his research in recognized international journals (over 400 papers registered in WoS with over 8000 citations and h = 46). He was the first Slovak author to receive the American Publishers Awards for Professional and Scholarly Excellence (with co-authors Katsumi Hirose and Michio Aoyama) for the monograph "Fukushima Accident: Radioactivity Impact on the Environment". He led several international projects, lectured at important international conferences, which he also often organized, and thanks to other activities he contributed to the successful presentation of Slovakia abroad.
