The prize in the category Outstanding Academic was awarded to Tomáš Vinař, an associate professor from the Dept. of Applied Informatics, Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics, Comenius University in Bratislava. Prof Vinař’s research focuses on bioinformatics, especially problems related to gene sequencing using the first available pocket-sized appliances. In the future, these appliances will help rapid identification of microbial diseases directly in emergency rooms and hospitals, a premise to early, effective and targeted treatment. Prof. Vinař is the director of the new study programme of Data Science that will open at our faculty starting from next academic year. He teaches students of applied informatics and bioinformatics, and he closely cooperates with the Faculty of Natural Sciences. He served as vice dean for two four-year tenure periods; leads the Student’s Development Team; and he strongly contributed to the organization of the Student's Science Conference. He is an excellent lecturer and a popularizer of science and of study at our faculty.

The shortlist of five best finalists in the main category Outstanding Scientist included also our colleague associate professor Zdenko Machala from the Department of Astronomy, Physics of the Earth, and Meteorology, recognizing his contribution in the area of cold plasma research. The wide area of applications of his research include would disinfection, medical equipment sterilization, cancer treatment, or applications in agriculture, water or atmosphere purification.
