The exhibition intended for high schools and public takes place on June 10 and 11 in the V-club on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the European Organization for Nuclear Research CERN.
CERN was created after the World War II so the individual nations could peacefully cooperate on common good. Thanks to cooperation, scientists are able to extend our knowledge. The development of accelerators and detectors led to the discovery of new particles, what contributed to building of the theory of elementary particles as we know it today. In addition to basic research, various technologies are being developed that find application in our everyday life. Slovak physicists have also been working on projects at CERN for three decades.
The exhibition is made up of posters presenting elementary particles (including the Higgs boson), accelerators at CERN, diverse research and new cutting-edge technologies with a positive impact on society. Students and physicists will be ready to answer your questions.
The accompanying program of the exhibition, is divided into several parts: the morning will be dedicated to high school students and accompanying teachers. As part of this program, students can listen to interesting lectures, see various interesting physics experiments and participate in the construction of simple particle detectors - cloud chambers. This part of the program requires registration on the above website.
The afternoon part of the program will be dedicated to the general public, while we will continue with a workshop with cloud chambers and it will be possible to listen to lectures on the contribution of CERN to Slovakia and the future accelerators.
On Monday evening, there will be a moderated discussion with Gregor Mareš, whose guests will be physicists working on research at CERN: dr. Lucia Anna Tarasovičová, prof. Stanislav Tokár and dr. Tomáš Dado. For the discussion, viewers can take part in an introductory virtual tour of CERN.
