The role of (nitro)imidazoles in cancer treatment

Avstract:
Imidazole [C3H4N2] is ubiquitous in nature as an important biological building block of amino acids, purine nucleobases or antibiotics, but also of potential radiosensitizers. Fragmentation of these molecules and their methylated derivatives, with a special focus on radical formation (crucial species for tumor eradication), will be presented in this talk. The focus will be put on the recent study of low energy electron interaction with these molecules leading to positive and negative ion formation examined by means of mass spectrometry.
