The local finals of the 9th annual Research Challenge competition took place on February 5th, 2019 in Prague. The contest is conducted by the CFA international institute. FMPI was represented by five students of the 3rd year students of Mathematics for Economy and Finance, namely Ivana Beňová, Petra Havlíčková, Natália Jurgová, Ján Pitoňák and Filip Sprušanský.
The assignment was to generate a financial analysis of a local company publicly negotiable at the stock market for which assignment the Czech company CEZ Group was selected. In the first round, the teams made complex reports including the analyses of the company and the business area, financial analysis, valuation, risk analysis and investment recommendation (Buy, Hold, Sell). Afterwards, the teams presented and defended their reports in English before a committee of finance experts. Eight teams succeeded in making the report and were subsequently invited to Prague to give their presentations and respond to questions by the committee members who were real experts in finance. After the first round of presentations our team C advanced to TOP 4 to give one more presentation and took excellent 2nd position. The contest is an outstanding example of a bond between theory and practice as it poses tasks routinely accomplished by the staff of investment banks. The faculty´s graduate MSc Marcel Imrišek was the mentor of our students and Dr Zuzana Chladná has long been supervising the student´ preparation for the contest.
We appreciate our students´ and colleagues´ contribution to the faculty´s high reputation. We also hope this success will encourage all other students to take part in the competition.
