Top Award from the Literary Fund for Assoc. Prof. Tibor Macko
In the category of Technical and Mathematical Sciences, Assoc. Prof. Tibor Macko and Prof. Wolfgang Lück received the prestigious Literary Fund Award for their joint monograph Surgery Theory.
According to the official media release: „Bratislava, September 25 (TASR) – On Thursday in Bratislava, the Scientific and Technical Literature and Computer Programs Section of the Literary Fund (LF) presented awards for the best works in the field of scientific and technical literature for 2024.”…
In the Technical and Mathematical Sciences category, Wolfgang Lück and Tibor Macko were recognized for their outstanding contribution Surgery Theory. The monograph offers a comprehensive overview of the current state of a modern branch of mathematics that also provides tools for addressing classical mathematical problems. „Its title could be translated as the "Theory of Surgery." It summarizes mathematical methods used to solve problems related to manifolds – abstract spaces resembling multidimensional surfaces," the Literary Fund noted.

The laudatory address at the award ceremony was delivered by Assoc. Prof. Tomáš Plachetka, Chair of the Jury. This exceptional publication appeared as Volume 362 in one of the world’s most prestigious mathematical series, Surgery Theory: Foundations (Grundlehren der mathematischen Wissenschaften, 362). As highlighted by Amazon: „This book has been written for learning surgery theory and includes numerous exercises. With full proofs and detailed explanations, it also provides an invaluable reference for working mathematicians. Each chapter has been designed to be largely self-contained and includes a guide to help readers navigate the material, making the book highly suitable for lecture courses, seminars, and reading courses.“ This monumental work comprises 961 pages.
A review in zbMATH (Karl Heinz Dovermann, zbMATH 1551.57001, 2025) states: "It is nice that so much about surgery is collected in one volume. The book brings together topics that are scattered over the literature, and sometimes difficult to find. Even the experienced reader may find something new. The extensive bibliography is great to have.”
We warmly congratulate Assoc. Prof. Tibor Macko on this distinguished recognition.
