A Historical Approach to Teaching Selected Concepts in Mechanics

Main Project Goals

  • Prepare a teaching plan for teaching mechanics in the first year of grammar school using a historical approach.
  • Determine the effects of a historical approach on students' understanding of selected concepts in mechanics.

Files for Activities

Here, you can find files that can be used in activities for teaching with a historical approach. Specifically, videos which can be used in video analysis activities.

You can find the program Tracker, used for video analysis on the following page: link.

For the video analysis of free fall you can use the following clip: link.

The following videos illustrate elastic collisions of two carts. They can be used to show the law of conservation of energy as well as momentum:

  • Elastic collision of a 90 g cart and a 190 g cart: link.
  • Elastic collision of a 90 g cart and a 240 g cart: link.
  • Elastic collision of a 90 g cart and a 290 g cart: link.
  • Elastic collision of a 190 g cart and a 190 g cart: link.

Student Worksheets

Student worksheets for individual activities will be gradually added onto this part of the page.
