Description of the Study Program

The main aim of the study program is the preparation of experts in the field of Biophysics and Chemical Physics in a high professional level. This preparation will enable the eventually enrollment of participants in a PhD program either in Biophysics or in Chemical Physics. Additionally, the knowledge that students acquire during the studies give them opportunities for the direct employment in the area of basic and applied research, as well as in biomedicine and industrial fields with especially emphasis in bio- and nanotechnologies.

What to Expect

In the study program in Biophysics and Chemical Physics the crucial learning topics are focused on the following courses: Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry, Physical Chemistry and Electrochemistry, Molecular Biophysics, Quantum Theory of Molecules, Experimental Methods of Biophysics and Chemical Physics, Methods of Biosignal Processing and Graphic Computation, Fundaments and Applications of Optical Spectroscopy, Fundamental and General Biology, Application of Quantum Chemistry and Molecular Dynamics to Molecular Systems, Biosensors and Nanotechnology, Theoretical Fundaments of Molecular Spectroscopy, Theory of Intermolecular Systems, Bioenergetics, Photo-biophysics and Phototherapy. These subjects represent the core knowledge of the field of study in Biophysics and Chemical Physics and its credit range is equivalent to 3/5 of ECTS (European credit transfer system) credits of the study program. The core knowledge topics also include optional courses.

By the completion of such essential and elective courses, students get a solid basis of theoretical methods that might be further applied in the fields of Biophysics, Chemical Physics and related interdisciplinary areas.

Moreover, students have the possibility to choose specialized courses from a wide variety of options according their particular interests. Such courses comprise: Membrane Biophysics, Physical Mechanisms of the Human Body, Introduction to Biomechanics, Fundamentals of Acoustics, Fundamentals of Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy and Tomography, Atomic and Molecular Collisions, Biomedical Applications of Magnetic Resonance, Liposomes in Biophysics and Medicine, Radiation Biophysics, Applied Programming in Biophysics, Physics of Complex Systems, Colloids and Surfactants, Lasers and Fiber Optics in Medicine, Methods in Bioinformatics, Multiparticle Techniques in Chemical Physics, Molecular Dynamic Simulation, or Design and Evaluation of Experiments with Applications in Biomedicine and Biophysics.

Master's Thesis. The content of diploma thesis in the Biophysics and Chemical Physics program is mainly oriented towards the solution of problems related to the mechanisms of processes in living organisms at the molecular level. These problems are related to the physical properties of membranes and their models, the physical properties of biopolymers, the molecular dynamics simulations and other current topics in Biophysics and Chemical Physics. Great emphasis is placed on the quality of thesis. Topics for diploma theses are carefully selected and are consulted by the team of guarantor, co-guarantors and other teachers of the department.

We established and maintain contact with experts from research institutes at the Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAS) as well as we enable cooperation with universities abroad, where various students participate in the ERASMUS program or in other forms of collaboration. These experts along with the teachers from FMFI of Comenius University constitute an experienced team of supervisors for our diploma theses.

The diploma thesis must demonstrate the ability of the student to apply theoretical knowledge in Physics, Biophysics and Chemical Physics to solve specific scientific problems. The originality of the thesis is necessary but not sufficient criterion for a successful defense. It is also indispensable to prove non-trivial evaluation and the use of acquired knowledge.

Graduates' Career Opportunities

A graduate from the Biophysics and Chemical Physics program has acquired fundamental knowledge in research methodology and scientific problem formulation. The graduated has a strong background in scientific methods of research and consequently is able to apply this information to solve concrete problems in Physics or Life Sciences in general. During the studies, the graduate has been familiarized with several disciplines that enable an effective work within interdisciplinary collective and can use methods of Quantum Physics, Thermodynamics and Statistical Physics in specific applications of Biophysics and Chemical Physics. The graduate student knows a wide range of experimental techniques which provide an opportunity for a comprehensive and complementary approach to the study of biological systems at the molecular level. He or she is able to independently formulate and develop problem-solving methods related to X-ray Analysis, Electron Microscopy, Radiation Spectroscopy, Optical and Laser Spectroscopy, Quantum Physics and Chemical Physics, Bioelectrochemistry, Applied Methods of Computer Modeling and communicate with experts in related disciplines (Biochemistry, Cellular and Molecular Biology, Genetics, Pharmacology, Immunology, Bioinformatics), in addition to the development of biosensors and nanotechnology.

A graduate student in Biophysics and Chemical Physics has the necessary theoretical knowledge and experimental skills for developing scientific research in this field as well as in interdisciplinary related natural sciences such as: Molecular Biology, Biochemistry and Biotechnology among others. This knowledge might be applied to both, basic research at universities or research institutes, and in a practical way in the food or pharmaceutical industry, as well as in environmental and clinical laboratories equipped with challenging experimental devices. Besides, obtained academic skills enable the graduate to be involved in teaching activities at universities. The experience gained participating at international and domestic projects during the studies, facilitate the graduate to easily integrate into interdisciplinary teams of basic and applied research.
