Description of the Study Program

The PhD. study program in Astronomy and Astrophysics is mainly research-based. The students spend most of their time focusing on research oriented towards dissertation. In the first two years, the student takes selected lectures presenting the actual state of knowledge related to his/her research field, including pertinent mathematical and physical approaches and concentrates on the study of the related current literature. In the course of the second year, the student has to satisfy specific formal criteria defined in the examination regulations, related to the topics of his/her research under the guidance of the supervisor. The students of the third and fourth year of studies in cooperation with their supervisors, solve open research problems related to their research field. According to their specialization, they solve problems from interplanetary and interstellar matter research, structure and evolution of galaxies, solar and star physics, either by constructing theoretical physical models, or by practical applications of known current theories of the studied fields. Students of this PhD. program acquire the ability for independent and team research work, learn to present results reached by them, are able to formulate scientific problems and develop the pertinent research discipline. They can find positions predominantly in scientific institutions in Slovakia and abroad.

Doctoral Scholarships

Full-time doctoral students who have permanent residency in the European Union are entitled to receive a scholarship for the entire standard duration of their studies. The scholarships are paid starting on the date of enrollment. The scholarship is determined in accordance with the tables included in the Law no. 553/2003 Z.z. as follows:

  • prior to completion of the qualification exam: 595,00 EUR (9th class, 1st level)
  • after successful completion of the qualification exam: 693,50 EUR (10th class, 1st level)

Scholarships are not subject to taxes or other fees.

Doctoral studies are considered an equivalent to full time employment and in the majority of cases cannot be combined with another employment. Job holding applicants who intend to keep their job are advised to apply for the external (distance) form of doctoral studies. Doctoral students enrolled in the regular form are expected to participate in teaching activities such as conducting recitations or exam grading, in accordance with the needs of their corresponding departments.
