Abstrakt:
For modeling purposes symmetrically dividing bacteria, such as E-coli, are often viewed as well mixed volumes where individual cells perform their molecular computations with slightly different parameters due to noise in molecular numbers. With in the cells fluctuations are limited by the time scale of dilution which is set by the division time of the cells, meaning that the timescales of processed in the cells are short. There are instances where this assumption is broken. For example we observe that the E-coli efflux-pump AcrAB-TolC does not mix on the time scale of the cell-division, thus giving rise to distinctly different states with in the population that persist, giving the isogenic population a structure that is reflected in the growth and tolerance of antibiotic stress. I will present a stochastic model inspired by this observation and explore the implications the longer time scale has on the population structure and the population growth in fluctuating, hostile, environments.
