Complete intersections are the simplest smooth complex projective varieties, they are constructed as the transverse intersection of algebraic hypersurfaces. The Sullivan-conjecture claims that complete intersections are classified up to diffeomorphism by their total degree, Euler-characteristic and Pontryagin-classes. In this talk I will give an introduction to complete intersections, present some known results about the Sullivan-conjecture, and give an overview of our proof of the 4-dimensional case.
