Názov: Search for a light sterile neutrino at SBL reactor experiments

Termín: 14.11.2018, 14:00 hod., zasadačka KJFB (F1/364)

Most of the neutrino oscillation results are well covered by the three-component neutrino theory (PMNS-matrix).  However several anomalies in short baseline oscillation data (Reactor Neutrino Anomalies, controversial results in the GALLEX, the SAGE, the LSND, and the MiniBoone experiments) could be interpreted by invoking a hypothetical fourth neutrino. This fourth neutrino is not involved in the standard interactions (hence the term "sterile"), but mix with the others. Expected phase space range of this mixing Δm2 ∈[0.1-10] eV2, sin2(2θ)∈[0.001-0.01] was determined from the global fit of the available experimental data with the best value Δm2 ~ 2 eV2, sin2(2θ) ~ 0.1. Recent experimental hints of possible existence of this new fundamental physics have boosted a huge activity toward experiment tests of this hypothesis in different directions of physical researches.

Recently, a large experimental activity has been observed in this area. Several short base line (SBL) reactor projects are taking data now and this summer they have presented the first experimental results. An overview of the latest experimental results for a number of leading SBL reactor projects will be presented: DANSS, the PROSPECTS and others. All these projects are using a small neutrino detector (mass ~ 1-5 t) installed close to reactor (at distances ~ 5-25 m). The future perspectives of the field will be also discussed.
